WebContent Project
General presentation

Objectives
To produce a flexible and generic platform for content management and to integrate Semantic Web technologies in order to show their effectiveness on real applications with strong economic or societal stakes.
The first group of applications on the platform revovle around technology watch:

  • economic watch in aeronautics;

  • strategic intelligence;

  • microbiological and chemical food risk;

  • watch on seismic events.

Implementation and state of the art
The mass of information available on the Web is considerable and will continue to grow. This information is difficult to manage because of certain technological barriers:

  • volume of the data: no solution integrating indexing into P2P, Web Services and semantics has been developed;

  • syntactic and semantic heterogeneity of the data: each type of document has its own organization of information (data types, format). The problem is to be able to gather structurally heterogeneous but semantically homogeneous documents, and to have the capacity to query them in a unified way;

  • multilingualism: currently, factual information cannot be dissociated from its language of writing;

  • dynamic character of the Web (content and formats);

  • visualization and handling of the data: information returned by search engines is often unmanageable with current interfaces.

Technological breakthroughs
To obtain exploitable applications, various technological challenges have to be solved, involving: multilingualism, large volumes of data management in a P2P architectures, deployment of Web Services, semi-automatic semantic enrichment, visualising large volume of information, etc. The second challenge in developping Semantic Web applications is their integration of various, scattered technological componentsw ithin the same platform. The design of a flexible architecture in this WebContent project will facilitate this integration.

Organization of the project
The project is divided in the following Work Packages:

  • Platform architecture;

  • Content extraction;

  • Semantic enrichment;

  • Search and presentation of information;

  • management and interrogation of large volumes of contents in P2P;

  • construction of specific applications.

  • Expected outcomes of the project
    Real-life use-cases explored in the project will be directly employed by the industrial partners in the following fields:

    • technological survey in the field of food safety;

    • economic watch applied to the aeronautical field;

    • strategic intelligence;

    • monitoring of seismic events.

    In addition to in-house exploitation of the platform, SME partners of the project will also benefit from the platform by integrating their technology for use by other clients. Lastly, the results of the project will be diffused by the academic partners: conferences, publications, press releases, industrial trade shows, standardization organizations, etc.

    As it is expected from this type of publicly financed project, the final platform will be opened to other organizations. The core of the platform will be released under an OpenSource licence allowing other actors in the field to integrate their own tools.

    An objective of the project is to be widely open to the scientific and industrial community. To achieve this goal the core platform is released under Free Software licences (BSD and LGPL).

    Available downloads include exchange model and services WSDL/XSD specifications, tutoriels to build Java WebContent services and applications and a C++ framework to easily build WebContent services from existing software in C++, including tutorials.

    You can browse the pages linked below presenting the architecture and the platform elements.

    Also, you can have a look to a demonstration using this architecture through the menu "Snapshots" at the left of this page.
